W&M raises $43 million in private giving

Annual giving increased by 19 percent for fiscal 2010.

Private gifts from alumni, parents and friends exceeded $43 million for fiscal year 2010, which ended on June 30.

"Fiscal 2010 is one of the most successful fundraising years in the history of the College," explained Sean Pieri, vice president for University Development. "These results are due to the unwavering loyalty of donors who understand the importance of William & Mary in American higher education."

Of the $43.2 million, the College received $19.9 million in expendable dollars; $14.2 million in endowment funding; $7.1 million for capital projects; and $2 million in gifts-in-kind. The overall total for fiscal 2010 represents a 15 percent decrease from the $50.8 million raised in fiscal 2009, a record fundraising year.

Annual giving programs (School of Business, Law, Education and the Virginia Institute for Marine Science; Fund for William & Mary, Athletics, Swem Library, and the Muscarelle Museum) at William & Mary - funds that provide the College resources to meet day-to-day expenses - topped $15.5 million for fiscal 2010 compared to $13 million for fiscal 2009, a 19 percent increase.  In addition, more alumni of the College are giving - for fiscal 2010 the College saw an 8 percent increase in alumni donors, 17,021 compared to 15,737 in fiscal 2009.

Among gifts and pledges from alumni and friends that contributed to fiscal year-end success:

·    In May 2010, Eff and Patty Martin, and their children, Andrew, Christine and Julia '09, committed to fully fund a new lacrosse/soccer stadium at Albert-Daly Field, home of the Tribe's women's lacrosse and men's and women's soccer programs.
·    In May 2010, The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation gave $1 million to support AidData, a public website and search engine tracking development finance flows that is coordinated by William & Mary's Institute for the Theory and Practice of International Relations in collaboration with Brigham Young University and Development Gateway.
·    In fall 2009, Todd L. '95 and Katherine Garrett Boehly '95 pledged $1 million to the Mason School of Business. In recognition of the gift, Miller Hall's café was named the Boehly Café.
·    In December 2009, an anonymous donor pledged $950,000 to create an endowment to fund four scholarships ($10,000 each) to be awarded to students in their junior and senior years who have an interest or emphasis in government.
